Everything Seems Right
I got back from the SHRM conference this past week and realized that it was one of the best SHRM conferences I had attended. There were sessions on everything from regulations to legislation to social media to software. The Hive was a happening place, thanks to Curtis Midkiff, for the social media Buzz and the Expo hall was definitely a place to see everything you wanted to know about HR in one massive and I mean massive hall.
But that’s not the reason that everything seems right – yes SHRM was a big part of it – but for me it goes beyond the four wall of a convention center to places all over the country and the world. Yes – I’m referring to the fact that we are in the midst of the Olympic Trials, which are amazing; the Summer X Games, which are, as my son and I would say, Sick; and of course “It Has Begun” – I am referring to the Tour de France. The colors – the pageantry – the suspense.
Even though I don’t believe in the stars lining up and all that mumbo jumbo – it would seem that for a brief moment this weekend everything seemed more than ordinary.
Crazy to think it and not – but as HR professionals – that’s the role we should feel like we have every single day. We should take up the banner, the torch, or whatever it is you do to realize that what you do for your organization is special and strategic. Yes – I said the “S” word in conjunction with HR. Whether you want to believe it or not you are a Strategic member of your organization and without folks like you doing things in the trenches to recruit, hire, make sure the company stays in compliance, keep people happy with their jobs and at the same time push the envelope with new technologies to engage the workforce – like with mobile and social media – the company could very well fall apart.
I watched this past week as some walked around the SHRM conference bewildered and in awe. I saw others on TV that had trained for four years, seem to stumble and miss their chance for a gold medal.
But then I realized with all the flux in life outside our organizations that HR is always there – a constant in every company that is there to carry the torch. Sometimes we feel pushed aside and sometime we may feel like we’ve missed the mark because things didn’t seem to go as planned. Never the less – don’t forget the role you play and how important it is to everyone. You are Strategic.
